The White House confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that notices had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services used by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
