The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of the field

After a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, combining effectively with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup match against the Magpies.
