A ranking policeman who jumped to the aid of a partner that was assaulted by a knifeman has been awarded the King's Commendation for Bravery.

Sergeant Tim Ansell fought with 27-year-old Jacob Brown after he placed a weapon to the throat of his partner Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown began the violence as the officers and their colleague, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were speaking to a motorist following a road collision in the area in July 2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed both Sgt Ansell and Sgt Foster before Police Constable Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.

"Officer knifed," the constable could be heard saying over his radio.

Officer-mounted and dashcam video shared by the agency showed Brown, that was clothed in black with a hood covering head, approach to Sgt Foster from the rear with a knife extended.

He collided with the officer who tripped and dropped to the ground, after which Sergeant Ansell stepped in and attempted to subdue him to the pavement although being continually attacked with the weapon.

PC Wolstencroft deployed his electric weapon and awaited a clear shot, ending the struggle to an conclusion.

Sgt Ansell was heard stating: "I need assistance on my throat here, I've been stabbed in the throat."

Sgt Ansell sustained two open wounds to his neck and additional wounds to his arms and torso, while Sgt Foster suffered cut injuries.

The department stated Sgt Foster utilized his palms to control his colleague's bleeding before medical personnel came.

This most recent honor arrives after the law enforcement team were granted internal Valor Recognitions in October 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the local Police Federation in early 2024.

They were also awarded a North West Valor Recognition in mid-2024.

"The actions of each policeman in the end protected themselves and meant no members of the public suffered any injuries."

Brown was given to an secure medical confinement in early 2024, as stated by officials.
