Her Royal Highness's Traditional Christmas Service of Carols Spotlights Community Volunteers
The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly festive musical service at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have supported their local areas.
The large audience will hear a selection of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The theme of the concert, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.
In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who founded an organisation, a support fund, to support families who have a terminally ill child.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," Her Royal Highness stated in a message before the festive gathering.
A Gradual Return
The princess has been making her own steady comeback to official duties after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Performance and Potential
Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by budding artists supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the former royal to broaden opportunities for musical tuition.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "amazing" to be taking part in tonight's service.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now a student at the Royal Academy of Music, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to cultivate their performance abilities.
Generations Gathering
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who plays the euphonium, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Among the guests will be people from various age groups.
That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, recipient of a prize for youthful altruism, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for local food charities.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been decorated with handcrafted festive wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
