European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
