Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
